Sayler's Medical Problems
The First Symptoms
The first of her symptoms started around Christmas 2001. We had a 4-legged visitor from the neighborhood come to check out Sayler. Sayler and I were in the front yard playing in the snow. When Gracie appeared, Sayler was so afraid she ran from the front yard to rear yard, sat down in front of the patio doors, stood up and held up her right rear leg. It was downhill from that point. Dr. Joe Sutton from Memorial Dr Veterinary Hospital in Manitowoc, WI, was her vet. It is 1 ½ hours from our home, one way, but I trust my life with him and my dogs. He checked her thoroughly and thought she had a pulled muscle. After a few weeks, she was getting worse. I asked the vet if her hips could be bothering her already. He was trained to do the Penn Hip x-rays which came back average for the breed. He then referred us to the Fox Valley Animal Referral Center in Appleton, WI, which had orthopedic specialists and board certified surgeons.
To the Vet for the First Surgery
| Dr. Janice Buback was the surgeon who evaluated Sayler and informed us that Sayler had Osteochondritis Dissecan (OCD) and that surgery would help relieve the pain. I had been familiar with hip problems in Saints but never had any OCD issues so I decided that I would let them take care of the problem. They removed a large lesion and thought things would turn out good. I was delighted for Sayler.

Shortly after I brought her home as a puppy, she developed chronic urinary track infection (UTI) in addition to the OCD. Her vet in Manitowoc told us Sayler had too much fold around her vulva and could possibly grow into it. That didn’t happen either and needed corrective vulvoplasty. Since that was done, there has been no reoccurring UTI.
